Overview

So far, digital tools have been introduced during the IoT boom, however, most of them only provide visualization, and the acquired data is not well used for manufacturing innovation.
One effective way to achieve this breakthrough is to introduce the concept of cyber-physical systems. The term “cyber-physical” is not yet familiar in Japan, but the goal of Industry 4.0 is explicitly stated as “cyber-physical.
The cyber-physical we are considering here is a higher concept than the so-called “digital twin.” It is not limited to cyberizing physical activities with a digital twin, but also allows different types of cyber-enabled activities to interoperate semantically on the cyber environment. This is called semantics interoperability, and the aim is to resolve inconsistencies in the activities of heterogeneous organizations through optimization and adaptive control by such a mechanism.
